Background
Aug. 16th, 2011 10:32 pmLittle is known of events before the movie, but from what can be gathered, Max was taken in by the man who is in charge of the EMAX research facility as part of a program to create enhanced guard dogs that could work as stand alone units and function in their work without human counterparts,, which would have made the conventional guard dog obsolete. Whether this was before or after the laboratory opened is unknown, as is his age and when he came to be a lab animal. As an experimental animal, Max had undergone many surgeries and had the DNA of various predatory animals added to his own to enhance his capabilities by adding the most desirable traits of each animal to him and increasing his intelligence.
Because of the time and millions of dollars put into the project, and his own instability, whenever individuals were a threat to the project his owner would have Max kill them. This is actually his first appearance in the movie, killing a young employee who was going to secretly let the press in to see the cruelty inflicted on the research animals. Immediately after, he was sedated and locked away until needed again.
That same night a reporter and her camera person did sneak in and found him in a covered cage, wearing the equipment that both monitored and kept him sedated. Deciding to use him in the introduction for her story, she opened the cage so she could pet him as she talked. He heard a guard coming and left the room, and knocked the guard out when he would have chased the reporters. When confronted by his master, Max decided that he didn't want to stay in the facility any longer and escaped by hitching a ride with the reporters.
They stopped at a corner store so the reporter, Lori, could get some things including dog food, but she and her friend were attacked by a mugger who was also intent on rape on their way back to the car. After being mocked by the guy, Max let himself out of the car and saved them, chasing the mugger out of sight...killing him and returning with Lori's purse before she could even finish picking up her dropped groceries, securing a place in her home and heart.
Of course, his presence didn't go over too well with her boyfriend, though she convinced him to let her keep Max...as long as he stayed in the yard and not the house. He suckered Lori into letting him sleep in the kitchen that night though, and then snuck upstairs where he peered through the keyhole to their room and saw they were about to have sex. He interrupted them by barking and pounding the door with his paws, and then tried to attack the boyfriend when Lori opened the door. Needless to say, he was back in the yard.
The next day, he let himself out of the yard and tore up the paperboy's bike tire because the kid accidentally hit him with a thrown newspaper and laughed while apologizing. Lori let one of the neighborhood kids take him to his house to play with his dog. As they were leaving he stopped to watch a mechanic fixing the boyfriend's truck and handed the man the new break line when he jokingly asked for it. At the little boy's house, he was introduced to his dog...who seemed to want nothing to do with him him even though he fell in love with her at first sight because she was in heat. He woke up the kid's dad by being too noisy though and had to leave. The same walk, the kid and a friend set him on a cat they disliked...he chased it up into a tree and swallowed it whole, scaring the boys away in the process.
When he wandered back to Lori's house and looked into the kitchen, she was making out with her boyfriend. Rather than bust in and disrupt things this time, he turned his attention to the boyfriend's truck and chewed through the newly-replaced brake line to try and ensure the boyfriend had an accident.
After a failed attempt to get Lori to stay home with him, he left the yard again and went back to the neighbor kid's house, letting himself in by opening the window after they left. He then cornered their dog n the master bedroom and slept with her. Then he let himself out and wandered the neighborhood. He encountered a postman and chased him down, killing him and dragging him under Lori's back porch to start burying him, after the man gave him a face full of mace.
The boyfriend came home while Lori was out and tried to feed him a poisoned steak, but Max realized what he was up to and he tried to kill him in retaliation. He escaped to his car and got away though, so Max took out his anger on the pet parrot when it made the mistake of taunting him...by eating it.
Lori came home soon after and took him in her car to a junkyard where he was given to a man because Lori said this was the best way to protect her. Max was uninterested in the man and his promises of a big ranch and good life though and tried to call her back even after her car was out of sight by barking...and was bashed over the head with a shovel by the man for his trouble. When he came to, he immediately started to bark at the man, who had chained him up with the intent of turning him into a mean junkyard dog. The man turned on him with a blowtorch when he wouldn't shut up, purposely provoking his anger and intending to use it on him...even turning up the flame. Max broke the chain and attacked him with the intent to kill, but the man managed to badly burn the left side of his face...including his eye. Before the man could get to his gun though, Max tore off his dick and balls and killed him...then started the trek back to Lori's house.
When he arrived the boyfriend had gotten Lori a new puppy to replace him and was going upstairs to get ready for work. He made his way into the bedroom by scaling the side of the house, where he knocked out her boyfriend, using the sound of the blender downstairs to cover the noise. Dragging him into the center of the room, he caused serious damage to his face by urinating on him before heading downstairs. Lori and the neighbor kid had heard her boyfriend's screams as the acidic urine did its job and were at the bottom of the stairs. The boy tried to hit him with a bat, but he caught it in his teeth and tossed him into a corner easily.
He had to flee the house though, as the police arrived with the intent to kill him because he was so dangerous. He escaped in large part because they underestimated him, outrunning the pursuing cars and simply terrifying the overconfident dog catchers that joined the chase. He returned to the house that night, killing the two detectives who were watching the house, but Lori was taken as bait by his creator before he could get to her. He chased down the car, climbing onto the hood and smashing through the windshield in an attempt to get his master's gun, causing the car to crash through EMAX's wall and was temporarily buried.
When he uncovered himself, he turned his ire on Lori, chasing her deep into the facility and back to where they first met. She was unwilling to hurt him even in her own defense though, which reminded him that he loved her and he ceased his aggression.
The his master showed up with a shotgun, intending to kill Lori to get him back, and in knocking him through the window and to the floor below, Max was shot and killed instead by accident.
